Water Moccasins Come Out of Hibernation

Saturday, March 17, 2012

It’s that time of year when snakes come out of hibernation and you are likely to start seeing several snakes at White Rock Lake.

One needs to be extra careful walking along the banks of Dixon Branch Creek. Snakes are everywhere, especially Water Moccasins. The images below were taken on March 17, 2012.

More often than not, you will see the snakes sunning themselves on branches that hang over the water, or in bushes beside the creek.

  2. Snakes will not bother you. They generally slither away when they feel the vibrations of someone coming. For the most part, they will only attack when feeling threatened.

  3. Neither one of the snakes photographed are water moccasins, or cottonmouths. These are harmless non-venemous diamondback water snakes.

Also, snakes don't hibernate, they brumate, which is a very different act.
